Significant Masonry Repair and Restoration is Needed in Delray Beach to Preserve Its’ History

Delray Beach has very few historic places and landmarks compared to other cities in the country, because South Florida is an up and coming community compared to a lot of places in the rest of the United States. It’s important that we as a community take a proactive stance on masonry repair in Delray Beach in order to preserve what little history we do have left.

According to the City of Delray Beach website, there are five Historic Districts listed in the Local Register of Historic Places for our City:

o   Marina Historic District - Situated on the Intracoastal Waterway and built around the town's City Marina, the district displays a variety of architectural styles and is the town's most pedestrian oriented neighborhood.

o   West Settlers Historic District - The West Settlers Historic District has a high threshold of historical significance. It is culturally meaningful for its association with the pioneering African-American families who helped settle the City.

o   Del-Ida Park Historic District - One of Delray Beach’s first planned developments; the district features a unique, diagonal street pattern with curvilinear corners creating triangular blocks with varying street frontages. 

o   Nassau Park Historic District - Platted in 1935, the district recalls the prosperity, pleasure, and style, which was the essence of the 1930s resort life in the City. The scale, dimension, and proportion of these modest homes are irreplaceable.

o   Old School Square Historic District - The district provides the initial footprint for the settlement and development of the town. Every Pre-World War I and II Vernacular architectural style in the City can be found here.

The Delray Beach community is relatively young compared to a lot of cities in the rest of the country. I’ve talked to a few older folks in the Delray Beach area that have lived in the area for 40+ years who can remember a time when our city was nothing more than a couple shops and forests. Now that West Palm Beach is a flourishing and heavily populated county, it’s hard to imagine it any other way; however, it was drastically different as recently as 25-30 years ago. Considering all of this, I believe that it is imperative that the Palm Beach community try to maintain and preserve the few historic places that we have with masonry repair and restoration and beyond.
